Question: is it possible to do something like the reverse? I’d like to do some cromakeying in AE and then output the project as clips+an edl-ish doc so I can do more tweaking in FCP. Is this a fantasy?
@Jason
I have been talking with Dale from C.H we are looking to combine and release a open source repo for this project.
soon to come…. I would like to get some ideas on problems people are having.. but maybe there are none?
@BEN
Not that I am aware of.. Would have to somehow recreate a file FC could import… like XML, from After Effects… which i guess is possible from a script… Problem is most the stuff you wanna do in AE wouldnt transalate to FC…
I used a more recent version of XML out of FCP 6 and the length (number of frames) issue was resolved BUT the clip i/o’s were still a bit screwy. Its wierd.
I experimented with the CreativeHacks version which does not have this problem (although it has a series of other bugs). If you’d like more info let me know.
Thanks again: I appreciate the work. If I knew scripting from a hole in the ground I would do some myself.
@Ben
I repeated your process, of exporting from final cut, import into AE, rendering out and layering it back ontop in final cut. I was unable to reproduce the same results… everything lines up using XML version 1 and XML version 4.
If you still need some help get a hold of me.. we can try to figure it out!
so, I am back to troubleshooting the issue i’m having and have had no luck, despite many variations. I still have a very strange issue: each of the clips (FCP) become layers (AE) of the correct length but the relative postion of the clip w/in its i/o’s is shifted (later I believe) by a frame or two. Its as if the AE script is ’slipping’ the clip in the sequence.
I’m using a DVC Pro codec do you think this could be an issue?
The creative-hacks script seems to place SOME of the clips correctly (although that script has a big problem with using the same clip twice in an AE project). Just comparing results, the CH script seems to have a different timecode bade (24 nondrop) and create a different starting timecode, before 0:00:00 by a few frame.
Perhaps these are related to the issue?
Anyway, I don’t want to abuse you for tech suppport but I’d love to get this script working. It is an awesome tool for a gutter level filmmaker such as myself.
@Tim
Sounds like an XML file problem. Can you give me some more details on what you’re doing?
Make sure you check out the video tutorial on how to export also. Just as my first instinct I would say, make sure you have your sequence selected before you export your XML. If this still is a problem, send me over the XML and I will take a loot at it
Ross, I’ve checked the XML using the Creative workflow hacks version to import it and it’s definitely got the sequence information in it. I have tried multiple XMLs from different projects with the same result. How do i send you a file.
Damn! I was so elated to find this script but still no success…
I am getting this error:
Unable to execute script at line 110. After Effects error: internal verification failure, sorry! {Folder name must be between 1 and 31 characters.}
I’m going to see if I can move the project around and rename some files/folders… hopefully that will work.
Given that today is the first can you PLEASE release one with no time limit. I appreciate you making the software but it is worthless if you can’t use it because it is EXPIRED!!!!!
Does your script cause the overbrights in a clip to be clipped at 100 when bringing clips over from FCP to AE? Automatic Duck clips the overbrights and one has to either bring then down under 100 in FCP or reimport all your clips and replace them in AE. If the script allows the highlights to be transferred intact that would be fantastic.
Wow. Great work. I had a problem with Dale (CWH)’s version which was that pictures I had placed in the timeline (PSD files) would not come through with their keyframes in the correct place — they would be slipped down as much as several minutes.
This script however does it correctly!
I guess MMV for others — maybe we’ll have to use a combination of your script and Dale’s;
Dude - this is my favorite kind of tool. It’s dead simple and works. Thanks so much for freeing us from the shackles of Automatic Duck. I;’m not sure about more complex editing translations, but for our post workflow this is truly wonderful.
Thanks again so much for all the hard work and willingness to share.
Hi, I am currently trying to use the script and it generally works. But now I am working with a project that when I import into final cut - gives me errors at line 213. Tried looking at what the problem is in the xml but didnt see anything wrong. (Although Im not sure what to be looking for).
Im gonna attach the XML and maybe someone could take a look at it if they dont mind. Would be hugely appreciated as I need to online this in a day or 2.
Thanks again for the amazing script and the other life saving tools. You guys are great!
PS - I mailed this to the contact email as well with the file attached

Creative hacks just released an unexpired beta - would you please do the same?

@Ross
I have used it in production under v1.0 and 1.01 and it does the job - straight forward and it works. Not had any of the issues described here.

I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong but when I try to import the XML into AE it comes up with the following error.
“Unable to execute script at line 130. After Effects error. Unable to call “addComp” because of parameter 6. Value is undefined”
I’m using FCP 6.02 and AE CS3
thanks

I take it back.. I made sure I highlighted the sequence and re-exported the sequence. Great script guys!

Will there be another version ready by the time this one expires?
Thanks,

Ross, this has expired again. When do we get a non-expiring version?
Tim

This was a great time saver. I’d be interested in a pay version if significantly cheaper than automatic duck.
March 6th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
The download link does not work
March 7th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
The link is fixed but the software says it is expired.

Thanks you very much!
You’re so awesome for creating this program (and it’s a lifesaver!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Can’t afford the automatic duck. THANKS SO MUCH ! Worked like a CHARM!
as Homer Simpson would say “woohoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Is it possible to convert text clips along with the footage from FCP to AE… Thanks
May 21st, 2008 at 2:44 am
Hey, I have a question,
At the outset, this script seems great! But I have one question. The Timeline and the footage that’s being exported are at HD 720p 60
Yet when I look at it in the viewer in after effects, it registers it at HD 720p 50. Is it altering the footage compression?
thanks.

Hmm… Nevermind. I just did an experiment. it seems the AE opens other files not exported from this script at 720p 50…
